IPH CEO Dr Andrew Blattman predicts the key trends for IP in 2022

IPH’s CEO and Managing Director, Dr Andrew Blattman, shared his trend predictions for IP in 2022 with Managing IP.

In the article, Andrew identifies five trends that didn’t exist two years ago, but which he believes will affect stakeholders across Asia-Pacific and beyond in the coming year. Andrew explains how he believes that, unlike in previous years where themes in IP were driven by the trends of a particular jurisdiction, this year we will see the biggest impact from global trends, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The trends Andrew identifies are:

  • technological self-sufficiency;
  • navigating Web 3.0;
  • the rise of AI;
  • demand for IP in Australasia driven by US-China tensions; and
  • increased momentum in cleantech.

Andrew concludes that two years ago, before the pandemic hit, these trends either didn’t exist, or were in their infancy. He believes that the pandemic has forced countries to focus inwards, accelerated global digital capability and adoption, and re-prioritised sustainability, and that as the year progresses, the trends he has identified will present both risks and opportunities, forcing a re-shaping of how we protect IP.
